Moonlight Madness in Petersburg

Friday, June 4

You had to see it to believe it!!!

Or as Roland said, “THAT was a hood!” (that’s Dutch for “hoot”).

I’m talking about the “Moonlight Madness” sale at the local IGA grocery store in Petersburg. And Roland, Sharon and I were lucky enough to catch it!

From 6-10 p.m. people dress up in their pajamas, robes and slippers … and come shop for deals. Around 9:30, there’s a drawing and everyone gathers in the store to see if they won … the grand prizes were an iPad, boots, and Craftsman tools not too shabby.

I didn’t have my camera, but grabbed Roland’s iPhone to take some photos, including one of Sharon with the owner Ken, who was dressed in a snazzy silk robe with matching silk striped pajama pants. Ken and his wife Sue (in her pink fuzzy robe) invited us up to their office and shared with us their entire history. They’ve been doing the “Moonlight Madness” event for 20 years. The first year they said people were lined up around the block waiting to get in. How’s that for PR in Alaska.

It’s THE big event in Petersburg … and we were lucky enough to witness it!
